So I thought the school I was at was a new experience! I started at the orphanage this week and I have been in total amazement since I walked into that place. First of all- their are 10 kids there which makes for a great, manageable number. But there is one lady who takes care of them who is 25 years old and has malaria. Second they have one bedroom that all 10 kids sleep in. They have one twin bed and a double bed. The 3 older girls (13,10, 9) sleep in the twin and all the other children sleep in the other bed. Then they have one small room with a mat in it to play in all day. They are not really allowed to go outside bc they get dirty and only bathe once a week. It just breaks my heart everyday I am there as they just cling to you bc we are basically there only contact, both physically and emotionally, that they really experience. Only 3 of them go to school (older kids) but come home at lunch bc they have chores to do. The entire situation is something that you see in movies or on the "sponsor this child" commerical. The older girls are soo good to the younger ones and basically act as a mother bc the woman is so sick and tired all the time to really do anything. Today for example, a little boy, Toshi, had to use the restroom (#2 mind you) and they dont have toilet paper and the older girl came over and used water to help him wipe. I dont know any 10 year old girls that would do that-- Im 24 and had a hard time with it!
After I have gotten over the initial shock of the place, I am quite happy with my placement. I feel my help and work is really appreciated by the mom and the children. We are learning colors, how to use scissors, and say objects in English. It is very frustrating but since I am hear for at least 3 weeks I am hoping to see some progress. Thank you for the game ideas-- they definitely need to be simple as it is usually the 3-6 year olds playing. We are cooking hot dogs for them tomorrow, which they have never eaten, which should be a great time. Next week I am going to get some paper to color masks for them to wear. They LOVE songs-- so any song suggestions would be great! I am having a hard time remembering songs! Cousins get your thinking caps on-- I want to know some songs! If you have a suggestion I will record them singing it so you can all hear! The children are soo sweet. Some of them definitely have problems from the malnutrition and the lack of parental contact- I am hoping to help them feel more confident and loved while I am there.
I will be looking into purchasing 3 bunk beds next week for the orphanage. Hopefully with all the donations from everyone and the help of other volunteers it ill be possible! So Thank you in advance!! I will keep you posted and hopefully post pictures of the children in the next 2 weeks!

Hey love,
As you might expect I am in tears just hearing about what you are seeing and so proud of what you are doing. You will leave such a bright spot in these childrens lives I know for sure. Please be careful yourself that you don't get sick yourself. Since my memory is like a wart hog's kids songs are not coming to mind but I will get the grott girls on this right away. Be safe and know that I'm right there with you. Love Mom
Jacqueline,
I pray you will always be safe.
What an experience, those little kids will love you forever. Keep sending messages and keep that little cross tucked in your pocket.
Mom told me a new way to get my message out so will try that. Else I have to go through Emily.
Love you Jacqueline. Gram
Hey Jax!!!!
Man what an experience. It seems very tough, but very rich at the same time. It makes everything we go through here seem like child's play. I'm sure your smile alone is comforting to the kids. You have such a fun and playful spirit. I know you are going to impact thier lives!
Like your mom said...be careful and take care of yourself as well but soak this all in!!!!!
Love you!!
Hey Jac, reading your description of the latest chapter of your experience, reinforces your decision to travel there for me , and serves as a vivid reminder of how much other people are in need in this world. You are modeling the type of "giving back" behavior that sets the tone for all of us. I am so proud of you Jac and still marvel that you are thousands of miles away making such an impact. Please know that in addition to those who read your blog, that you are touching many, many others that I come in contact with as I share your stories of love and the care you are providing. Miss you much Jac and think of you daily, but am comforted to know you are impacting so many others. Love you much and be safe, Dad
I'm speechless. And you just made some type of liquid fall out of my eye.
You should teach the kids Found a Peanut and Do Your Ears Hang Low...I think those are pretty classic camp songs. The Forever Song is probably not a good choice...it will drive you crazy.
Anyway, I say this pretty often but I'm so proud of you.
Stay safe!
Love you!
That sounds pretty hard core, Jac... but still much better than mine and Ashley's placement.
What I really really really really really want to know, though, is this - is she back?!?!?!?! I heard she asked Joe to marry her. Oh My!
Just so you know, I'm going to keep reading this blog and posting comments that make little to no sense. Get used to it.
Jacqueline,
Love from Gram again. Am going to Church this morning and will definitely be praying.
Love your blog and what you are doing. Be safe and love, Gram
Hey Jac, glad to hear you are having a good time and love what you are doing over there. I just got caught up on your posts, for some kids songs how about "If you're happy and you know it clap your hands", "B-I-N-G-O", and "Ring around the rosie"
miss your face! What do you think they would do if you busted out dodge ball for one of your games? haha. JK! dont do that :) but i miss you. I might go to chitown this weekend...I'll prolly leave you another voicemail. You might spend half a day catching up on my random voicemails where I talk to myself on your machine ;)
Hi Jacqueline, Haven't finished reading all of your blog yet, but thought of one song to help with english and learning. Do you know/remember "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes, Knees and Toes, Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes, Knees and Toes, Eyes and ears and mouth and nose, Head, shoulder knees and toes, knees and toes". Hopefully, that would be easy with repetition... You point to each body part with both handsas you're singing it and go a little faster each time so they also get a little bit of exercise/activity.
You're doing great!!! Take care, Mary Anne Siewerth
